Rutgers Online MSW Program

The Rutgers School of Social Work offers a completely online MSW program with a Clinical Social Work concentration. The program features asynchronous instruction, meaning students can complete their assignments and view lecture materials without having to login at specific times. Asynchronous instruction is particularly advantageous for students who have other professional and family obligations.

At present, Rutgers offers a part-time online MSW program designed for traditional standing students, as well as a full-time advanced standing program. The online traditional standing MSW program takes three years of part-time study to complete, and requires the completion of 60 credits. The advanced standing program is a 39 credit program that takes four semesters to complete. Rutgers’ online MSW program uses the same curriculum and has the same academic and field education requirements as the campus-based program.

Like all MSW programs, Rutgers’ online MSW program requires its students to complete field education at a local social services agency. Rutgers’ program requires the completion of 1,125 hours of field education for traditional students and 885 hours for advanced standing students. The Office of Field Education matches students to field placement sites in their area.

Rutgers University accepts students during their summer, fall, and spring semesters (only fall for advanced standing). Applications to Rutgers’ online MSW program are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis. Application requirements for the online program are equivalent to those of the campus-based program, and include a personal statement, a 3.0 undergraduate GPA, and completion of an introductory statistics course.

Rutgers’ online MSW program is accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
