How to become a social worker in New York
Students who plan to become social workers in the state of New York can pursue one of two licenses: the Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW). Both are issued by the New York Office of the Professions, and each comes with its own set of requirements and steps toward licensure.
Pathway to become an LCSW in New York
- Complete a Master of Social Work degree program with at least 12 semester hours of clinical coursework.
- Complete at least three years of post-graduate supervised experience in diagnosis, psychotherapy, and assessment-based treatment planning.
- Pass the Clinical Social Work Licensing Examination administered by the Association of Social Work Boards.
- Complete mandatory training related to the identification and reporting of child abuse.
- Apply for licensure through the New York Office of the Professions.
Pathway to become an LMSW in New York
- Complete a Master of Social Work degree program with at least 12 semester hours of clinical coursework.
